Microsoft Purview Compliance
Data Classification and Digital Rights Management
A cloud-first vision increases the need for us to better protect our data. To meet these demands, Microsoft Purview is a solution that provides visibility, control and protection over data throughout its lifecycle.
Microsoft Purview Information Protection
Microsoft Purview is a Data Classification and Digital Rights Management (DRM) solution. It gives people the ability to apply persistent sensitivity labels that classify files and emails.
In addition, it gives users the option to apply a layer of protection to their files and emails through encryption and restriction of access.
Sensitivity labels for files and emails
Microsoft Purview utilises sensitivity labels to classify documents and emails and optionally apply Digital Rights Management protection to data stored on user devices, within the Microsoft 365 environment and sent via email to both internal and external parties.
Classify – applying a sensitivity label means the data classification is persistently tagged on files and emails and displayed within the Microsoft 365 client applications and Office for the web. A number of systems/applications can also read the sensitivity label on the data file in order to take action to further secure and mitigate data protection risks.
Protect – sensitivity labels can also add protection alongside classification to a file or email, preventing the content from being accessed by anyone outside of those authorised to do so. Access restrictions are determined by the user through a combination of content encryption (converting it into unreadable code), user account authentication and authorisation (Microsoft account), and rights restrictions (controlling who is able consume the content, and what they can do with it).
